us versus them

So, it was a lie. Forty is not the new 30.  I’m disappointed. I thought Susan Sarandon and Madonna and Sarah Jessica Parker had actually convinced American culture that there’s life after 39.

NPR reported this morning that while men have sustained the worst of the “economic downturn” (isn’t that what we’re calling it?) women aged 40 and up are having an especially hard time finding work.  The average unemployment period–six months–has doubled, especially for middle-aged women.

How does this happen? I mean, who isn’t hiring us? Is it us?  Are we betraying ourselves, preferring to be surrounded by youth to convince ourselves that we’re still young? (And is that so much better anyway?)

Or is it that lurking sense of youth against age–”us” versus “them”? We’re simply not cool and capable enough. It’s the parent/adolescent dance all over again. And if it is them, I wonder whether it occurs to them that “they” will become “us” eventually. Then what?

I’ve read and heard about ageism for decades. I admit, I never gave it enough thought. I was too busy stomping around about sexism. But now, how I can avoid it? It’s bellowing miserably at my front door.

Madonna Fashionista!!

So “Madge” ([lastfm]Madonna[/lastfm]) is going to be releasing her own fashion line through Macys.  Hoping she will consider donating the  sales to charity.  The thought of her having even more money makes me physically ill…I’m just sayin’.  Most of you said you would buy it “if it was cute.” More after the jump…

Lindsay Lohan Sues E-Trade for $100 Million

Lindsay Lohan is suing the online trading website E-Trade, claiming the boyfriend-stealing, “milkaholic” baby in its latest commercial named Lindsay was modeled after her. Lohan is claiming E-Trade is banking on her first name that she claims has awareness equal to Oprah or Madonna.

Conveniently enough (for E-Trade’s lawyers) E-Poll Market Research tracks the awareness of more than 5,000 celebrities and has already made a similar comparison.  Our E-Score Celebrity service (no relationto E-Trade) measures awareness of both name and face and here’s what it shows: data from E-Score Celebrity, by E-Poll Market Research.

Name Awareness:

Lindsay Lohan   77%

Oprah Winfrey  89%

Madonna            91%

Image (Face) Awareness:

Lindsay Lohan   69%

Oprah Winfrey  92%

Madonna            67%

On a full name basis, Lindsay Lohan has substantially lower awareness than Oprah Winfrey and Madonna.  If you want to do a follow up, please feel free to use the information (with proper attribution, of course).  Let me know if you have any questions.

8: #3 - Madonna

It’s been a little while since I did another 8 list, so this time, I thought I’d go easy on myself and do the best:  Madonna.  But with over 150 tracks to choose from, maybe it isn’t realistically taking it easy, but it is fun. And rather than simply do my favourites (though that’s definitely reflected in this list), I’ve chosen 8 tracks that I want you to appreciate.

8 MADONNA TRACKS TO APPRECIATE

8.  Like an Angel Passing Through My Room (listen)
A little known ABBA cover, I’m entranced with the simplicity.
7.  Liquid Love (Alternate Orbit Version) (listen)
Yes, the original of this demo was great and all, but this alternate version sounds far less kitschy.
6.  Hung Up vs Huey Lewis & the News (download)
I’m in love with mash-ups that work well together and Hung Up has plenty, but this one is just so fun.
5. You Must Love Me (Sticky & Sweet Tour Live) (watch)
One of the highlights of her latest tour, she just seemed so into it.  The warm vibe live was overwhelming.
4. Burning Up (Birds 2006 Remix) (listen…and watch?)
Who doesn’t love this gem from the first album?  Crazies.  This is a nice lil update, but not too different to bastardize the brilliance.
3.  Vogue (1990 MTV Video Music Awards) (watch)
Seriously, the best performance in history.  Seriously.
2.  Music Inferno (watch)
If #3 is the best performance ever, this is the best mash-up paired with performance ever.  Best.  Truly.
1.  Justify My Love (watch)
This is and always has been the masterpiece.  From the video to the marketing to the mixes, it’s all perfect.  This is the Madonna I grew up loving.

Now, there are 101 other amazing tracks and ones that I actually like better overall than some of these, but why make the same list over and over.  Appreciate!

Madonna only has 4 minutes to change the world. I have almost 4 times that much.

As it relates to your health, the least important 15 minutes of the last six months of your life was probably the 15 minutes you spent with your doctor. The reason for this is just the opposite. It’s because your doctor believed that those 15 minutes were the most important to your future.  I have to convince you to diet, stop smoking, check your blood sugar, exercise more, take your medications, and drink less all in only 15 minutes. The truth is we are one voice in a crowd of many, fighting to change the way you eat, what you drink, how you spend your time, and what to do with your money.  The average American is bombarded with 500-1000 commercial messages a day, every day. I have a few minutes with you,  maybe 4 times a year. Better eat my Wheaties.

As physicians, we need to buy more time. It starts by understanding that true life change occurs outside of the little amount of time we spend in an office together as doctor and patient. We have to creatively engage patients in the conversations surrounding of their health, outside of the exam room. I will make many life altering diagnoses in my office, but few if any life altering decisions will be made at the same time by my patients in regards to their chronic disease. These are the everyday decisions that affect our health: what groceries to buy, whether to drive by the gym or stop and go inside, whether to take the elevator or the stairs. We must get the message out and it must be both creative and relevant. 1000 ads a day is a lot. Another commercial just won’t do. We need to bring it.
