Girl’s Aloud breakaway Cheyl Cole celebrated her double chart success in style on Sunday’s X Factor result show with the news that her debut album had rocketed to the number one spot, joining her hugely popular single Fight For This Love.
Simon Cowell grudgingly congratulated the pop star on The X Factor results show but, after putting his jokes to one side, gave her a heart-felt congratulation from everyone on The X Factor team.
“This is an incredible thing you have done and will you come to my record label please!”
Cole is the 12th female artist to achieve this rare double chart success, putting her in a category alongside the likes of Madonna, Celine Dion, Barbara Streisand and more recently, Lady Gaga and Lily Allen.
Her song Fight For This Love, which has held on to the number one spot for a second week after knocking off last year’s X Factor winner Alexandra burke, remains the fastest-selling track of the year so far.
Not even Irish heart throbs Westlife, who have had 14 number one hits and sold 40 million records worldwide, were able to shift the countries Northern star from the top spot.
Her debut album 3 Words has beat off tough competition from Michael Buble’s Crazy Love, which came in at number two, and Michael Jackson’s posthumous This Is It, which came in at number three, showing just how far this pop star has come since her first audition on Pop Stars: The Rivals.
“3 Words now looks set to be one of the biggest albums of this coming Christmas,” said Martin Talbot, Managing Director of the Official Charts Company.
